Harvest Festival at Wildlife West
Join the activities at the annual Harvest Festival on Saturday and Sunday, September 3-4, 2016, at Wildlife West Nature Park, in Edgewood. The Festival opens on Saturday at 9 a.m. with a tractor parade beginning at Wildlife West, traveling west along historic Route 66 and ending at the Tractor Supply Company.
New this year, the Festival includes “The Heart of New Mexico Fiber Gathering”. Fiber vendors from Santa Fe, Los Lunas, Boxque, McIntosh, Mora and Edgewood will participate and sell everything from fiber to raw fleeces, hand spun yarn to finished products that are woven, wet felted, crocheted and knitted. The public is invited to enter the fiber competitions for Hand Spun Yarn, Garments & Home Accessories, and raw wool and mohair fleeces. The entry fee per class is $2. Entry forms can be found at www.heartofnmfibergathering.com.
As visitors stroll through Wildlife West Nature Park they will experience an old west atmosphere and experience the rich history of the pinto bean farming in the Pinto Bean Museum, which displays antique bean processing equipment, farming artifacts and historic local photos. They can explore a replica of the western town of Venus (original name of Edgewood), along with antique cars and trucks. Also on showcase will be old iron tractors, steam engines, corn shellers and other historic ranch equipment.
Get a behind the scenes tour of Kothari, Wildlife West’s 500 pound black bear, and newest arrivals – two 10-month old cougars and three 5-month old coyotes, also known as prairie wolves. Mark Chavez, renowned chainsaw artists, will demonstrate artistic chainsaw techniques. Don’t miss the tractor games on Sunday at 2 p.m. on the field in front of the historic Pinto Bean Barn. The Festival includes local artists and the Knights of Columbus volunteers will serve up pinto beans, fresh sweet corn, and hamburgers and hot dogs.

EM Residents,
We here at EMIFPA feel it is important to relay wildfire related efforts in our region. The following is from Crystal Powell, Sandia Ranger District Ranger, regarding one of the many projects the District is undertaking to make our forest a better neighbor.
The Sulphur project area is located on the Sandia Ranger District of Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands and includes 1,173 acres. The project is being implemented due to high tree density and severe competition have created conditions that compromise forest health, wildlife habitat, and scenic quality while increasing the possibility of high-intensity wildfires.
The Environmental Analysis and Decision Memo were completed and signed in February 2014 and implementation began in the fall of 2015. This project is broken up into two different project areas, Sulphur A and B. Sulphur A includes the developed recreation sites Doc Long, Sulphur Canyon and Cienega Canyon, Sulphur B is everything south of Cienega Canyon. The project was divided to better manage finances and implementation, but all are designed to restore desired conditions, control invasive plants, and manage for sustainable recreation.
Treatments include mechanical (mastication or harvesting equipment) and hand thinning, fuelwood collection, prescribed burning, invasive plant species management, trail rehabilitation and relocation and decommissioning of non-system trails.
Project partners include New Mexico State Forestry, The Nature Conservancy, the Rio Grande Water Fund, New Mexico Forest Industry Association, the Pueblos of Sandia and Santa Ana.
Thank you for your help in getting this information out.

Carlito Springs Rehabilitation Project
Community Meeting Scheduled
-- Main house, site improvements and accessibility issues will be discussed --
Bernalillo County – Bernalillo County is hosting a community meeting to present preliminary plans for the phase II rehabilitation of the Carlito Springs Open Space property. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Deputy James McGrane, Jr. Public Safety Complex, 48 Public School Road in Tijeras, N.M.
The Carlito Springs Phase II Rehabilitation Project proposes to restore the main house, develop on-site improvements such as utilities, parking, drainage, landscaping, signage and trails, and address site accessibility issues. This project also entails making programming decisions on the four existing cabins for future improvements.
“Carlito Springs is an oasis in the desert,” says Commission Vice Chair Wayne Johnson. “Phase II of the rehabilitation project will take major steps toward restoring this beautiful property to its past glory and toward the realization of its long-awaited potential.”
The main house will support events, activities, and programming led by the Parks and Recreation Department Open Space program. Improvements to other portions of the site will help support environmental education and resource-based recreation, while also highlighting Carlito Springs’ historic qualities.
The first phase of the Carlito Springs Rehabilitation Project was completed in 2014 and included a new trailhead and a sustainable natural surface trail system allowing for visitor parking and access.
The property is open from dawn to dusk to hikers.
Carlito Springs is a 179-acre property located on the north side of Interstate 40 and next to the Village of Tijeras. It is bordered by private lands to the east, west and south and the Sandia Wilderness to the north.
Bernalillo County purchased the initial 177 acres in 2000 and later acquired an adjoining two-acre tract in 2008 that included the natural water springs from which the name Carlito Springs was derived. The property is eligible for both the national and state register of historic properties.
For more information about the property, please visit www.bernco.gov/OpenSpace.

Last 3 Chuckwagons at Wildlife West
Just 3 more Chuckwagon Barbeque and Western Music concerts left this season at Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood. This Saturday and next (August 13th and 20th), the talented Holy Water and Whiskey will perform. There will not be a Chuckwagon show on Saturday, August 27 because the Santa Fe County Folk Festival will be held this year at Wildlife West. Closing the season on Labor Day weekend, September 3rd, will be the popular Watermelon Mountain Jug Band. All performances are held in the all-weather amphitheater.
Each show opens at 6 p.m. with an incredible free-flight Peregrine Falcon demonstration presented by world-renowned falconer Tom Smylie. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience these magnificent birds close up and learn how the fastest raptor on earth survives in the wild.
Come early to walk around the wildlife zoo and see the newest arrivals – two 10-month old cougars and three 5-month old coyotes also known as prairie wolves. The Chuckwagon shows help to support the nonprofit native wildlife zoo, which is managed through volunteer support. Plus, kids will love the new Children’s Imagination Trail.
Dinner shows are $25/adults, $23/seniors, $12/child 5-11, and kids 4 and younger are free. Reservations are required by 2 p.m. on the day of the show. Call Wildlife West for reservations at 505-281-7655 or for more information www.wildlifewest.org.
