EMIFPA Fire Info - October 24, 2016: announcements

10/24/2016 9:40 AM | Nancy Carpenter

EM Residents,

We apologize in advance for the multiple posts that we will be making over the next few days. Please bear with us, since we have many things that need to be announced, and sending them in one post will make this too long.

Sunbear Vierra, AFMO for the Sandia Ranger District, would like everyone to know that the Sulphur PG prescribed burn is "looking very good". The residual heat (and therefore any smokes) are "staying within the lines" on both units that were treated. There is still be the possibility of some smoke for up to 2 more weeks from stump holes and small pockets of duff/needle cast.

Warning!!! Although this area has been posted as closed, we know that the District cannot keep people from entering the burn units. Therefore, we are passing this warning advisory along: anyone using the trails in the area needs to be aware that there are burnt-out trees along the trails. These trees could come down at anytime. Until Sandia Ranger District crews can remove these hazard trees, please take appropriate precautions. This warning also applies to anyone going off trail - stump holes and hazard trees are very dangerous and are not always obvious.

Pictures and maps of the Sulphur PG prescribed burn can also be found on the Cibola NF Facebook page, linked here: https://www.facebook.com/cibolanf/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel.

DO NOT call 911 to report smoke from the prescribed burn area. Personnel are well aware of the smoke. Please keep the 911 hotline open for emergencies. As we stated above, there is no danger from these areas of smoke since they are all well within the area of the treatment, and pose no threat of escaping.
