Dog Head Fire Update

06/16/2016 9:06 AM | Nancy Carpenter

Residents, Members, Friends and Neighbors,

Commissioner Johnson asked us to forward you a copy of the Bernalillo County’s Emergency Manager’s latest fire situation report plus an update from Bernalillo County Sheriff Capt. Joshua Campos.  As usual please share with your Association members, family and friends in the East Mountains.  Commissioner Johnson has also asked me to remind you prepare your “Go Bags” and develop a plan  for your animals on the chance the fire spreads and it impacts your area. Information on the contents of a “Go Bag” plus other critical information will be posted on Commissioner Johnson’s Bernalillo County Webpage

The fire continued to burn and grow throughout the night. However, I am being told that the growth was only 20 acres which was a lot better than what was projected. There have been some confirmed lost structures and homes to the fire in the Tahique area just south of the Bernalillo County line. From the weather predictions we are getting today there is going to be higher winds, lower humidity, and increased temperatures today and into tomorrow. These weather conditions will help the fire grow and continue to travel northeasterly. There continues to be an evacuation order in place for the communities I mentioned yesterday and the shelter at Los Vecinos has about 12 evacuees at this time.

I have sent the graveyard squad of ERT home for the morning to get some rest. The National Guard has a contingent of 20+ personnel standing by at the EACC. I will assign these folks to continue evacuation notifications in Escabosa and Ponderosa neighborhoods. These personnel will only be on scene until 11:00am. Prior to that I will meet with the national Guard commander and we will decide in conjunction with Fire and OEM if we should get a second relief contingent of National Guard to replace them. At this time I do not have any “extra” deputies up here as I have been sending the ERT personnel home. Given that it is fat Thursday I should have enough deputies on shift to handles calls for service as well as continue with road blocks and assistance to National Guard for evacuation notifications. There is an all hands meeting planned for 10:00am today at the Torrance County courthouse which I am planning on attending.
