EMIFPA Fire Info - April 4, 2016: "Red Flag" Tuesday, April 5th!

04/04/2016 7:43 AM | Nancy Carpenter

EM Residents,

The confidence of the NOAA meteorologists in their forecast for tomorrow has allowed them to change the outlook for tomorrow's weather from "fire weather watch" to "red flag" conditions. The complete weather discussion is linked here: http://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=abq&wwa=fire weather watch. These are the highest wildfire danger warnings that we see during fire season, and we recommend that you use them as planning tools for disaster preparedness. You may have noticed that we are now posting "fire weather watch" warnings as well as the "red flag" warnings. Because the NOAA meteorologists have educated us better regarding these warnings and their meanings, we feel that the reasons for making these posts (be prepared) are as important for residents as they are for first responders. We apologise for the increase in numbers of emails hitting your inbox.

We recommend that you bookmark the following two web sites: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/abq/, and http://www.srh.noaa.gov/abq/?n=forecasts-fireweather-dss. These two sites should be reviewed daily as you prepare for work. They are invaluable planning tools, and allow you to keep your situational awareness focused.

Two things stand out about the weather watches and warnings that we are seeing over the past weeks. One, they are occurring with weekly regularity. Two, the duration of the "red flag" warning over the course of the designated day is increasing. These are clear indicators that we are in the midst of our wildfire season, and that you need to be vigilant as well as prepared. Remember, if you see or smell smoke, always call 911 immediately. Report it, don't ignore it!!
