Luncheon was held at the Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras. Board members present were Bob Brittain, Jose Madera, Wayne Clay, Bill Herman, Regina Marnett, Liz Morantes, Barbara Ormand, and Julie Albright.
President Bob Brittain called the meeting to order at 11:50 am. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and board members, chamber members, and guests were introduced. A Wednesday sign up sheet was passed for volunteers to man the Tijeras Visitor’s Center on Wednesdays.
Karen Takai from EMIFPA talked about the tragic Yarnell fire in Arizona where 19 firefighters lost their lives and 100 homes burned. Karen recently returned from Yarnell and pointed out the similar fire conditions between the Yarnell area and the East Mountains. She stressed the need as a community to reduce fire fuel around our properties. We must make a commitment to eliminate those fuels to prevent a situation like the Yarnell fire.
Treasurer Bill Herman gave the June Treasurer’s Report. Income was $340 and expenses were $1315.98 for a net loss of $975.98. June bank balance was $6,217.56.
New member presentation - Garrett Williamson of The Water Works Drilling Resources described his family’s business of drilling and servicing of water wells. New member presentation – Teresa Stribling, owner of Just Too Cute in Cedar Crest described her business as a wholesale and retail gift store. She started the business in 1997 in Cedar Crest. The retail store features many unique gifts and accessories.
Guest speakers – A presentation on consumer investment fraud by Bernice Geiger and Mark Pinto from the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing-Securities Division. A video highlighting the Doug Vaughan Real Estate Ponzi scheme where 600 investors were duped out of $75,000,000 from bogus promissory notes was shown. New business:
The Village of Tijeras is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Saturday, August 17 from 11 am-2 pm. Vendors are needed. The Chamber will have a table to display members’ information and brochures.
A chamber networking mixer will be held Friday, August 16 from 5:30-7:00 pm at Your Dental and Medical Elite Spa in Tijeras.
A chairperson is needed for the Chamber Board Nomination Committee.
