Minutes for the East Mountain Chamber of Commerce Monthly Meeting 5/3/2012
The meeting was called to order by President Bob Brittain at 11:50am. Board members present were
Bob Brittain, Bill Herman, Diane Shoudt, Wayne Clay and Chamber administrator, Julie Albright. Absent
were Barbara Ormond and Loretta Olson and Kara Schug.
A current member presentation was made by Chris Appert of Dion’s Pizza. Dion’s opened in
Albuquerque in 1978 by 2 individuals. Today there are 17 locations in Albuquerque and Lubbock,
TX. They will be opening in Colorado Springs, CO soon. Most employees are high school and college
students and 15 to 20 are from the East Mountains. They interview 5 to 6,000 people a year and hire
about 10% of those who apply. Their motto is “What’s your slice”, meaning what do you like to do?
They also administer a reading program for kids in conjunction with the Isotopes. When they read 6
books they make it to first base, & so on with kids earning tickets to the Isotopes games. The program is
called “Make it happen for 100 children”. About 1000 kids tour Dion’s each week.
Another current member presentation was by Linda Eaglefeather of Young Living Essential Oils. She
found her business by accident after being treated for an injury with massage oils. She described each
oil and its health benefits and passed them around for all to smell or try. For example, Lavender is good
for burns and Peppermint for migraines and tension headaches.
Guest speaker was Bill Herman of Hollywick Farms who spoke about the 9th annual East Mountain Fiber
Farm & Studio Tour. The event will happen June 2nd & 3rd from 10am to 4pm. Included will be 8 farms
and 1 studio. Register for prizes at each location plus a grand prize.
Bill Herman gave the Treasurer’s report. The month of April started with $8576 in the bank and added
$1535 income with $2763 in expenses, leaving a balance of $7348.
May Pharmacy won the drawing for Member of the Month. A door prize was donated by Comfort
Keepers and was won by Tijeras Senior Center.
It was announced that the East Mountain Celebration would take place Sunday May 6th from noon until
4pm and the Tijeras Village Council meetings.
Meeting was adjourned at 1pm. Board meeting to follow.
Respectfully Submitted by Diane Shoudt, Secretary
