General Meeting Minutes - July 1, 2010
President Jeff Burdette called the meeting to order at 11:50 a.m. at the Village of Tijeras Visitor Center and Chamber Office. Introductions followed the Pledge of Allegiance.
Due to the 4th of July weekend and expecting low attendance, we did not have a guest speaker or a member presentation.
Susan Walker was not available to give the Treasurer’s Report.
Jeff Burdette announced that the Chamber is working on sponsoring a highway sign that would bring recognition to the East Mountain Chamber of Commerce, located from Trail Rider Pizza on Old Hwy 66 and going east.
He also noted that the Golf Tournament is on schedule for Thursday, September 9th at Paako Ridge.
Jeff attended the last Village of Tijeras council meeting, and they are on track for the new senior center and water project. Jeff stated that the plans for the senior center look impressive and quite nice. It is supposed to be finished on August 31, 2010.
Jeff also attended the SASS event undefinedEnd of Trail‖ that took place the last weekend in June. He mentioned that they know how to put on a nice event. All participants were friendly and welcoming. It is a good time – the Chamber should do more to support SASS.
East Mountain Friends for Families representative, Pamela Reeves, announced that donations for school supplies, paper towels, facial tissues, etc. are needed for their undefinedBack to School‖ drive. They will have boxes set up at various locations in the East Mountains. Donations may also be dropped off at the Chamber office.
Lori Webster, from East Mountain High School announced that the EMHS annual fundraising event undefinedNight Under the Stars‖ is July 31st. On July 17th the undefinedHole in One‖ contest starts. They are also having a raffle for undefinedTwo to the Wine Country in California‖. Tickets are $25 each. There will be a silent auction. For more information, contact Lori at (505) 281-7400 ex168.
East Mountain High School Principal, Doug Wine contacted Jeff Burdette and asked Jeff to attend a undefinedNew Mexico First‖ gathering in Albuquerque. This year the focus was on education. It was a 2-day event. Jeff felt that a disappointing aspect was a lack of mentorship, Great ideas were presented during the first day but the focus turned to mentoring during the second day. but A worthwhile experience overall.
Jeff announced that Chamber member business presentations are available.
Cid Morgan, Sandia District Ranger spoke about the recent bear attack and sightings of bears. She mentioned that the food order is in effect. This order allows law enforcement officials to cite people and fine them if they are 100 feet or more away from their food. Stage 1 restrictions are in effect and fireworks are strictly prohibited on all national forest lands.
Cid also mentioned upcoming projects that the Forest Service is working on.
The Chamber had hoped to have a undefinedFlea Market‖ event this weekend, but due to lack of participation it has been rescheduled. Jeff mentioned that this type of event work have good networking opportunities.
Sandia Mountain Lions Club is having their undefinedMarket‖ on July 31st at Mountainside Methodist Church.
The Chamber is seeking more volunteers for staffing the office on Wednesdays.
