Current members and guest speakers from East Mountain High School, Principal Doug Wine and Development Director, Lori Webster spoke on implementing a mentoring program in conjunction with the East Mountain Chamber business members.  One of the goals of this endeavor is to have the students graduate from high school and have a business perspective and experience in the real working world.  The students would work 4-8 hours per week with businesses, non-profits, and churches, etc. that are interested in this program. The chamber is looking for businesses to mentors these students and offer their areas of expertise. The students work to earn 1 school credit either in the fall or spring semester. Special guest speaker was Carol Sanchez from Blue Star Mothers, an organization which supports all the men and women who have served our country as members of the Armed Forces. The organization was formed in the 1940’s and sends out over 2000 boxes each year. It means a great deal to the troops who receive these boxes and letters from school children. They also hold a 5K fundraiser, to be held in September and are looking for sponsors. Carol shared that children of servicemen/women have high rates of PTSD and suicide rates. They are looking for donations to help these children, 5K sponsors, and donations of food items. They will clean up and haul away tree trimmings, brush, ect.  They remove dead trees as well. Their purpose is two-fold – 1; to make money with their business and 2; clean up the East Mountains. They expressed that they are ministry minded and want to help low-income people or seniors who may not be able to pay full price for their services. Barbara also mentioned that the Bernalillo County Transfer Station is having Free Green Waste Days from April 5th-19th. President Rachel Donovan announced that the July 3rd lunch meeting will be cancelled as it falls the day before the holiday. She also asked the attendees for ideas for upcoming speakers, possibly DOT to speak on guidelines in regard to the confiscation of business signs.  She also inquired about the possibility of having a breakfast meeting instead of a lunch meeting once in a while since some members cannot attend the lunches.

The winner of the member drawing of the month was East Mountain Directory.

Rachel Donovan was the winner of the drawing for the door prize donated by the East Mountain Chamber of Commerce.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:45. Board of Directors meeting to follow.
